Foam rolling is an excellent self-massage strategy in the sports and clinical setting. It has become a therapeutic exercise used to speed recovery and address injuries.

The Functional Foam Rolling courses will revolutionize foam rolling and evolve the foam roller techniques from the traditional self-massage strategy into a method for improving and restoring muscle function. FFR further standardizes foam rolling into a specific, reproducible method. This allows a practitioner, therapist, trainer and coach to develop specific protocols to maximize muscle function, recover from injury, complement treatment, release tight muscles and allow athletes to perform at their best.

Master the fundamentals of foam rolling techniques in this intensive, 2-day, hands-on practical instruction course that covers the comprehensive Roll Release® foam roller techniques developed by Dr. Ryan Emmons that goes beyond the current information surrounding foam rolling. It will explore the true physiological effects of foam rolling on a per muscle basis and from a muscle connectivity perspective to enable the practitioner to develop systematic protocols and use the foam roller in a logical, practical way. Practical relevance to the sport and clinical setting will be discussed.

The Level 1 course will begin with a thorough theory lecture to ensure the attendee is completely versed in understanding foam rolling. This will cover topics such as basic physiology, foam rolling research, foam rolling technique, the what, who, why, how and where of foam rolling, tool comparisons, risk and benefits and foam rolling limitations.

Next, the course will focus on each individual muscle of the body, the nature of its impaired function (dysfunction) or muscle tightness and how to release the muscle to correct the issue. To accomplish these strategies, the course is designed to instruct the attendee how to roll every major muscle in the body and all of its variations to tailor the techniques to a client of any tolerance and experience. Basic evaluation techniques will be taught with a small emphasis on muscle testing to allow the attendee to assess muscle function and measure foam rolling outcome success.

Lastly, the course will wrap up by connecting all the information presented to allow the attendee to thoroughly understand foam rolling and how to develop protocols for any individual based on experience, tolerance and the rationale for rolling and ensure a therapeutic effect is achieved to get the best results from the foam rolling techniques.

Simply, this course provides the attendee with all the information necessary to recommend foam rolling (is it appropriate, right tool, right techniques and body position) with the ability to perform a basic assessment of the muscle dysfunction, and apply the right foam rolling protocol for local muscle function restoration and changes. This mean you can assess, apply and activate the muscle(s) in question.

Throughout the course, the attendee will have an opportunity to evaluate muscle function, practice each foam rolling protocol and variations and observe other attendees to evaluate and determine if the foam rolling is properly performed. Clinical cases will be demonstrated to show relevance to integrate foam rolling into the clinic practice or sports setting and clinical examples will be covered for practical knowledge. A brief discussion of common sports injuries and activities related foam rolling protocols will be covered.
